Description

I've observed that sometimes users without a Commons account get tripped up the first time they enter after getting invited to a group/site. I believe the path they are expected to take is to click the "Register" button at the bottom of the "You must log in to access the page you requested" page (shown in attached screenshot), but they don't recognize this. Are there any design changes that might make the register path more clear to these first-time users?

Tom, could you please share more information about how you're getting to this login page? You mentioned that it's after they are "invited to a group/site"; but the email sent when a user is invited to a group/site should have information about registering for the Commons.

Ah, I see the person I was testing with previously actually did have a pre-existing account (active five years ago!). A screenshot of that invitation email is attached. Does the email differ depending on whether the invitee already has a Commons account? I'm working with a group of faculty this week, many of whom are new to the Commons, and can also have a look from that side if you don't have a chance to school me on it.

Yup, that's how it works. If you input an email address that we identify as corresponding to an existing account, we don't include the "registration" info in the email.

IMO this is as it should be, but I'm copying Sonja and Luke here for any potential feedback. (Luke spearheaded much of the flow design for this feature, including some of the "magic" account-searching logic that occurs when you submit email addresses.)

Ah, got it. That was sloppy testing on my part. I think that’s case closed, unless Sonja and Luke want to see anything changed.

Thanks, Boone.

Moving this to the 1.16 milestone so it is visible.

However, Luke or Sonja, feel free to close this one out.

Good from my side.
