Description

Ned Benton writes:

The UFSBAC site will have a lot of PDF documents in the media gallery (for example - auxiliary corporation and college foundation tax returns) and I want to organize them to be searchable for the campus faculty leaders.

My default solution is to organize them into menu hierarchies and display the menus in sidebars.

However, ideally I would like to be able to categorize and/or tag them and then let the FGLs search by year, campus and type of document. I could do this if the documents were posts, but I think I need a specialized plug-in to do this with PDF files in the media gallery.

Do you or the DEV team had any advice on this?

I tried treating them like photos in an image gallery plug-in but could not make it work.

Scott, I'm wondering whether you are familiar with any plugins on the Commons that could be used to build the kind of document library that the user is asking for.

I don't think we have anything like this currently. Maybe we should show Ned this link - https://www.competethemes.com/blog/wordpress-document-library-plugins/ and see if any of them appeal to him.

Also, he could look at these plugins that we do have already: "Embed Any Document" and "Media Library Assistant," but I think he is looking for something more robust.

Thanks for having a look, Scott.

I'd like to remove from consideration any plugins that are not freely available on the wordpress.org plugin directory. Commercial plugins from CodeCanyon etc mess up our update workflow and have opaque or nonexistent channels for reporting issues. (We can make exceptions in cases where we know the plugin to be excellent.)

Memphis Documents Library looked somewhat promising but reviews like this https://wordpress.org/support/topic/does-not-respect-neighboring-software/ are extremely worrisome to me, both in general ("doesn't play nice") and in specifics (use of PHP sessions).

I wonder if https://wordpress.org/plugins/wpdr-simple-downloads/ would be appropriate. We already have wp-document-revisions, and it looks as though wpdr-simple-downloads might add just enough functionality to serve the user's purpose. Scott, do you have thoughts about wp-document-revisions and whether it (with or without this additional plugin) might fit the bill? I'm unsure about the frontend tools.

It looks like you need to go to the site backend to actually see (i.e. download) the files. I don't see any frontend tools. I wonder if he could use Media Library Assistant - https://wordpress.org/plugins/media-library-assistant/ - We have that already, and it can create PDF galleries on frontend, and tags and categories. And it has an enhanced search box although maybe not on the front end.

Oh, media-library-assistant is a good idea. The mla_gallery shortcode looks like it might fit the bill. Marilyn, could you make this suggestion to the user?
