Bug #19658
closedSite Search Not working properly
0%
Description
Hi all -- I wanted to find a site created last year -- https://cunydpi.commons.gc.cuny.edu/
I couldn't remember the URL. I noticed that when I want to Sites and tried to search, neither a search for part of the URL ("cunydpi") nor the site title ("Digital Project Institute") resulted in the site coming up -- instead, no results came up.
It might be worth double-checking other aspects of search (people, groups) to determine whether they are working, as well

It appears that the blog search does not match by URL. This may be an area for future enhancement. So you would need to search for something like 'Digital Project Institute'.
In this case, the site doesn't show up because the site's blog_public setting (Dashboard > Settings > Reading) is 0, or "discourage search engines". Sites only appear in search when they have blog_public=1.

Thanks, Boone. I would not have thought that making a "discourage search engines" privacy choice on a site dashboard would completely prevent a site from showing up in our own internal site directory page.
Is it really true that only sites with sites with blog_public=1. show up in the Commons site directory (https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/sites/)?
If so, we might want to talk through the usability of the site privacy choices, as I'm not sure its implications are clear to users. They weren't to me.

I will add this to the discussion agenda for our team meeting on Friday.

We decided during the monthly meeting today to make a relatively simple change here. Instead of only #1 in the site visibility settings below allowing a site to be shown in the Commons directory, which is how it is now, we are going to make it #1 or #2. #3-#5 will still hide the site from the Commons directory.
1. Allow search engines to index this site
2. Discourage search engines from indexing this site
Note: Neither of these options blocks access to your site — it is up to search engines to honor your request.
3. I would like my site to be visible only to registered users of the CUNY Academic Commons
4. I would like my site to be visible only to users I add to it.
5. I would like my site to be visible only to its Admins.

Also bumping this one for possible summer work, depending on how difficult the team feedback above is to incorporate.
