Steve - Sorry for the radio silence. Can you clarify whether the comments in question were on posts where you were the author? The language in the WordPress admin is not clear about this: it says "Email me whenever anyone posts a comment", but what it really does is emails the author of the post.
I don't know whether we've got a way for admins to receive email notification of all comments on their blogs, whether or not they are the post authors. I've added the community facilitators as watchers, in the hopes that they might have an idea.
