Description

Hi Ray,

Thanks for including the RBE message for folks where the message cannot be replied to via email. It seemed to have slowed down the number of folks replying to doc uploads and such, but Matt and I noticed that the email account is still getting some messages from folks who thought they were responding to the entire group. From the forwarded email I see that the message, "--- Replying to this email will not send a message directly to the recipient or group ---" is included, but the strange thing is that it's from a forum topic which can be responded to via email. Matt was thinking perhaps folks were having their emails forwarded and tried to respond from an email not associated with their Commons account, but is it possible for you to look into this a bit further to investigate? I know there were issues with the following thread in the Nursing Educators at CUNY (NYCNECT) group: "Informatics Days - July 29 & 30." If you need any additional details please let me know.

Many thanks,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

I noticed this as well yesterday after doing some testing with RBE and Group Email Subscription.

In an attempt to fix one issue (the "--- Replying to this email will not send a message directly to the recipient or group ---" line), I inadvertently ended up creating another one!

The issue is only the first person in an email-subscribed group would receive the RBE header line, the rest wouldn't.

The good news is I've fixed this in commit 0c12c8c.

Boone, is another 1.4.x release of CAC on the horizon? If so, when? This is a pretty big bug that I introduced, which is totally my fault.

Good catch, Sarah, and thanks for the quick fix, Ray.

The current plan is to do a release on August 11 - 1.5 if it's ready, otherwise 1.4.x. That's two weeks away.

I can do a dot-dot-dot release if there's a consensus that this shouldn't wait two weeks to be fixed. Let me know what you think.

No problem, and one more thing... = )

I'm also receiving forwarded messages from people (I used folks about 100x in my previous post so I'll try to change it up), who are replying to group announcements via email. I didn't think this was possible and just tested -- it isn't. It looks like you can't even reply to group announcements when you are logged into the Commons (I thought you used to be able to do that). That being said, our documentation says otherwise:

I'm not sure if announcements were originally set up for users to reply by email and directly through the group or if perhaps something changed along the way. I'd be happy to update the post/FAQ above, but first just want to clarify what is supposed to happen.

The issue is only the first person in an email-subscribed group would receive the RBE header line, the rest wouldn't.

Do they just receive the RBE header line, or does it also get forwarded to the account? I ask because I just received another message that was a reply to a reply. I'm a little confused as to what exactly is happening and I don't have access to the group where most of the forwards are coming from so it's hard for me to tell. Personally, my vote would be to knock this out before the next official release. Especially since I'm going on vacation next week and the other community facilitators will be taking over the support emails.

Sarah - The group announcement thing sounds like it might be a separate issue - or, if it's related, it sounds like it's low priority, compared to the primary issue in this ticket. Would you mind starting a new ticket for discussing it? I imagine that ticket will go into a further release milestone.

Unless Ray has any objections, I'll do a CAC emergency release tomorrow to fix this issue. Thanks to both of you for your work on it.

Do they just receive the RBE header line, or does it also get forwarded to the account?

Sorry for not explaining the problem properly, Sarah. Usually, everyone gets the custom "Reply-To" email address when replying by email, but in this case, only the first person in an email blast did.

For the rest of the people, they would get the regular "From" address (the address) and also in the body of the email, they should have seen the --- Replying to this email will not send a message directly to the recipient or group --- line.

This is a big bug as people who usually reply to forum threads via email would just continue on and reply because that is what they are accustomed to, which is why you're seeing the emails in the address.

On the other hand, this is also an interesting case study as the --- Replying to this email will not send a message directly to the recipient or group --- line appears to have been ignored! I'm curious to know the number of emails that were sent to the gc.cuny.edu address since this bug has occurred. Perhaps the line needs to be in captial letters!

Again, sorry for my ineptitude!

Unless Ray has any objections, I'll do a CAC emergency release tomorrow to fix this issue. Thanks to both of you for your work on it.

I have absolutely no objections with this :)

No worries, Ray. We didn't get tons of emails, I think it was around 8 this past week including replies to announcements and doc uploads. It is surprising considering the messaging that's now included but whatcha gunna do. One was actually from Michael Branson Smith -- not that I'm calling him out or anything, lol! = )

Thanks for scheduling the 1.4.31.2 release Boone, I moved the announcements issue into a separate ticket.
