Feature #2793
closedAdd explanations to twitter page

Description
We've updated the menu links on the new Twitter page, now we need to decide on some explanatory text to help users understand what Twitter feeds and lists they're viewing.
This ticket builds off of #2740 where some ideas where already listed:
Chris:
Then in that same box we should have some explanatory text. Here is a first shot. "click here" should be a link to a new page we would make with the lists. "Tweets from Commons Members" and "Tweets from around CUNY" would be changed if alternative titles are picked. Also they should be bolded to make it clear they're titles.
The Tweets from Commons Members and the Tweets from around CUNY community are pulled from list of know Twitter accounts. To view the lists click here. If you are not on the list and would like to be added, or if you have any other comments, send an email to commons@gc.cuny.edu.
Matt:
I like your explanatory text and want to suggest only that they be linked to the actual lists on twitter rather than a page on the Commons
Dom:
As an alternative to a separate page for the explanatory text (or even keeping it in the sidebar), I could put a small header paragraph on the Tweets from the Commons Members and the Tweets from around CUNY timelines. That way we could tailer each paragraph to that specific timeline with a link directly to that list on Twitter. This way we wouldn't have to worry about writing the appropriate text to differentiate between two links and two lists. Each header paragraph would be above its associated timeline, contextually.

I've added headers and short paragraph explanations to each Twitter timeline on the twitter page in my local environment. I've attached a screenshot of what the default timeline (the @cunycommons/cunycommons list) looks like. Here's each header/paragraph combination so we can discuss/edit (they are listed in the order they appear in the sidebar):
Tweets from the @cunycommons/cunycommons list
The following tweets are from Commons members pulled from a list of know Twitter accounts. To view the list click here. If you are not on the list and would like to be added, or if you have any other comments, contact us.
Tweets from the @cunycommons/CUNY list

Tweets by CUNYAcademicCommons (@cunycommons)
The following tweets are from the official CUNY Commons Twitter account. To view or follow us on Twitter click here, if you have any other comments or concerns contact us.
Tweets about "#cuny"
The following tweets are from the CUNY community at large, using the hashtag #cuny to discuss general CUNY news and information. To view these tweets on Twitter click here, if you have any other comments or concerns contact us.
Tweets about "#cunyevents"
The following tweets are from the CUNY community at large, using the hashtag #cunyevents to discuss specific CUNY news and events. To view these tweets on Twitter click here, if you have any other comments or concerns contact us.
In each paragraph the words "click here" links back to the appropriate Twitter page and "contact us" links to our contact page.

I've created explanations for each of the timelines currently being displayed on our Twitter page. I'm moving this ticket to 1.5.6 so we have time to discuss and review my changes before closing the ticket. But the changes will be available after tonight's 1.5.5 release.

Hi Dom -- I'm confused. Are these changes live on the site? I don't think I see them here - http://commons.gc.cuny.edu/twitter/
Updated by Dominic Giglio over 10 years ago
Yes they are there and have been there since I opened the ticket. I think this issue got lost in the discussions about Profiles and Dashboards.
The change was small though. Each timeline on my Twitter page used to be "just" a timeline. There were no explanations (or next to no explanations) about the content of the timeline. What I added was the bold heading and short paragraph you see above each separate timeline. They just give a little background as to where these tweets come from and how to get added to the list or follow it on Twitter.
Since you barely even notice them, I think they are doing their job. The reason I opened the ticket was for any feedback about improper grammar, spelling, links, etc. Since we've received no negative feedback from the community as a whole or from our team specifically, we can probably close this ticket and revisit the twitter integration after more pressing major updates are ironed out. If we even need to.
A revisiting of the page's functionality would probably fall under a larger extension of what the page is capable of. It seems to be working just fine and serves its purpose of integrating our social twitter interactions into our site.
