Description
Per ticket 280 - http://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/show/280
We should edit the content of the activation email that gets sent to users. I think we're using the default BP/WP text, which is generic enough that it might be contributing to notification emails being marked as spam.

Do you have suggestions for what the content should be?

Another bump. Does anyone have suggestions for what the welcome email should say?
Updated by Matt Gold about 14 years ago
I think it should include the following information, if possible:
Welcome to The CUNY Academic Commons, an academic social network for faculty members, graduate students, and administrators across the CUNY system. We look forward to your contributions to our community and hope you'll explore the full range of ways you can connect with others on the site.
To begin, you might find to find others at your college who have joined the site:
[list of three randomly chosen avatars/accounts + "see more" with a link to all profiles from that college]
Explore some of our blogs:
[list of three blogs with links to more]]
or our groups
[list of three groups with links to more]
To get you started, here is a list of 10 Things You Can Do After Joining the Commons:
and then I'd list a finalized version of the ideas here: http://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/show/329
this list should contain links to resources on the site

blah blah blah
A better way to think about the other stuff is in the context of a larger "My Recommendations" feature for the Commons, of which the new-member email would be just one part.
Updated by Boone Gorges about 14 years ago
Redmine decided to cut off the first two paragraphs. Thanks Redmine.
Short version: What you're suggesting will take a lot of development. Maybe better to look in two stages:
1) Modify email to something static for now (with welcome message, recommendation to visit the blogs/members/groups directory, link to 10 Things)
Then, down the road, we develop a My Recommendations system, of which the new-member email will be a part.

Sounds good to me. And thanks for letting me know that you don't think of my suggestions as "blah blah blah" (or, at least, as not only that)

https://github.com/castiron/cac/commit/c26c765bc639a5a47f4d4220493ebb616587a854 contains a filter that changes the email to read as follows (with dummy data)

Dear boone B Gorges,
Welcome to The CUNY Academic Commons, an academic social network for faculty members, graduate students, and administrators across the CUNY system. We look forward to your contributions to our community and hope you'll explore the full range of ways you can connect with others on the site.
To begin using the site you must click the following activation link: http://local.cicdev.com/activate?key=de680a1d71d37dfb
Once your account is activated, you might like to find others at Brooklyn College who have joined the site: http://local.cicdev.com/members?s=Brooklyn+College
Or discover content from our blogs or groups:
http://local.cicdev.com/blogs
http://local.cicdev.com/groups
Enjoy using the CUNY Academic Commons.

You'll see that I'm pulling the user's display name dynamically, and also generating a link to a search of the members directory on the school name provided by the user at signup. The links to blogs and groups are general.
My one concern about this email is that the activation link isn't clear enough. If the link is not clicked, the account will not work, so it's crucial for users to see the link and understand that they must click it. Maybe some asterisks around that line?
Please let me know if you're happy with the wording, or if you want it changed please tell me exactly what you want it to be.

One more ping before I mark this one resolved in advance of the next release.
Updated by Matt Gold almost 14 years ago
Thanks for the ping. I like your text a lot. The only thing I'd add is something that points people to two things:
a) the fact that blog and groups can be created, not just read.
b) some sort of orientation guide on the site (perhaps Scott's Codex?)
Here is some text for those suggestions:
a) Right under the blogs/groups:
In addition to reading blogs and joining groups, you can also create them:
How to create a blog: http://codex.commons.gc.cuny.edu/faq/#How_can_I_create_a_blog.3F
How to create a group: http://codex.commons.gc.cuny.edu/faq/#How_do_I_create_and_maintain_a_group.3F
b) Right under that:
"For a comprehensive introduction to many features of the Commons, please take a look at the Codex: http://codex.commons.gc.cuny.edu/
Feel free to edit that if you see fit.
