Description
Hi Boone:
Can you give some thought to how we might go about understanding how important messaging is on the site?
Some possible metrics include:
- # of users who use messaging,
- # of messages sent per user,
- total # messages,
- % page clicks to pages involved in messaging, as compared with other functions)
Thanks!

Hi Boone --
The context is that the UX evaluation spoke a lot about our message system. I/we feel that that is not a huge priority for the site, but if every member is sending zillions of messages every day, maybe we should reconsider that. If you could give us a sense of how many people use the message system, that would be helpful. Thanks!

Here are some numbers:
- Total number of active member accounts on the Commons: 4897
- Total number of distinct users who have sent messages: 720
- Total number of distinct users who have received messages: 1103
- Total number of messages sent: 4439, as part of 2074 threads
Same numbers, from 2013 only:
- # users who have sent: 232
- # recipients: 209
- # messages sent: 748, as part of 324 threads
I'm having a hard time understanding how to apply the necessary wildcard filters to the Google Analytics data. I have a feeling it's not possible to query existing data in this way, though I've set up a report for future Messages traffic. I'll let you know if I find something.
In the meantime, please let me know if there are other helpful numbers I can pull from the DB.
