Though I haven't used it yet, http://wordpress.org/themes/sixteen looks to be a good and free match for the $49 http://themetrust.com/themes/hero, which I have used and enjoyed on the Macaulay eportfolio install (e.g. at macaulay.cuny.edu/eportfolios/chudnovsky13/).

Attractive features of Sixteen:
  • responsive, including a responsive slider
  • customizable header, footer, and background
  • parallax effect supported
  • grid layout for homepage
  • custom menus supported
  • left or right sidebar

It's also well rated: with 108,947 downloads and 11 reviews, it's at 4.6 / 5.0 stars. Reviewers especially praise the designer's quick responses to support questions.

I'd like to try it out for my personal homepage, but suspect it could be quite useful for organizations and group blogs.
