Description

Please see the attached screenshot, which shows a profile where no info has been added in the "positions" section.

It looks a little odd to me to have "Positions" appear there with no info. Chris, what do you think? One thought might be to have something show up for logged-in users looking at their own profiles, urging them to fill out those fields, and for it just to be blank to others/non-logged-in users

  • Target version set to Not tracked

It'd be helpful to know whether in this case Lisa (a) edited her profile and incompletely filled in the Positions widget, or (b) did nothing, and this is the state of her profile as it was migrated to the new system automatically. It should not be possible for an empty Positions field to display like this.

from Lisa: "I haven't done anything with the positions area of profile yet. This is how it ported over [from the old profile system to the new portfolio system], to the best of my knowledge/memory."

For users viewing others portfolios
nothing should show.
After we move to the new page layout for what is now in the Commons Profile tab the tabs would not show as well.

For users viewing themselves:
I think the idea of showing a progress bar and some kind of message is fine. I would probably place it by where the tabs are now, next to the edit button there. I would have to think about the messages. Probably one for people who have nothing filled out and another for people who had made some progress, maybe a third if they have completed or nearly completed their profiles.

Another question to answer would be whether the message is always there or if it disappears in one of two situations:
1. The user has a completed profile (according to our progress metrics)
2. We give the user the ability to dismiss it.

Because we want people to complete these and "out of sight is out of mind" I would lean towards always having some kind of message and progress bar always visible but being short.

I forgot to add, I won't move forward on any mockups or anything unless we decide to add it to the 1.7 milestone.

This appears to be a bug, no?

Chris, thanks for your suggestions. I think we should maybe move them to a new ticket or possibly move them to the progress bar ticket, as this ticket should deal primarily with the bug we're seeing through Lisa's profile.

Yes, good idea

I'm not sure how this happened originally, but I've put a fix into place that prevents an empty Positions widget from displaying. https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/cf30aef1966267f5be855d7995d5dda49b12dc67 I'll bump this to another milestone for further investigation.

  • Status changed from Assigned to Resolved

I spent more time looking into this today, but I couldn't really find any definitive source of the problem. Since there are now checks in place to prevent the symptoms from being shown on user profiles, I think we're OK to mark resolved. Feel free to reopen if you hear another report of the same issue.
