Just tried to create an account manually for someone but ran into an error. Please see the attached screenshot.

This is a WordPress issue: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/20459
For the time being, I would suggest removing the whitelist momentarily to create the user. In the medium term, I can write a workaround that will allow super admins on the Commons to bypass the whitelist. I'll also try to resurrect that ticket to see if anyone on the WP team strongly disagrees that the change should be made in WP itself.

Hi Boone -- would the custom sign-up code plugin that you created offer another way around this?

Yes, though then it'd be most natural to allow the user to create and activate his own account (there's no simple way to fake the activation process).

Hi Boone -- I'm confused by your last response. The custom sign-up codes allows potential members to visit the registration page and create an account by entering a custom code when signing up . . . . the code is supposed to allow account registration even though the user is not using a CUNY domain (and might be using gmail or hotmail or whatever). Are we talking about the same thing? I guess that my question is whether this bug affects the functionality of the custom sign-up code.

You were trying to create a member account manually. You suggested the non-CUNY signup code as a workaround. I said that yes, it's a workaround, but it won't allow you to create the member directly; you'll have to create the code, send it to the member, and have the member create his own account. So it's a workaround rather than a direct fix (the problem being that admins can't create these accounts).
I guess that my question is whether this bug affects the functionality of the custom sign-up code.
No, the WP issue is specific to account creation through wp-admin.

Hi Boone -- FWIW (and for the record), I tried to have Seth (our new Metrics specialist) create an account with a non-CUNY sign-up code; here's what he said happened:
I am trying to create an account, but even with the sign-in code, and its confirmation that it works when typed in (changes to "OK!"), I am returned to the sign-up screen with an error that my email address is not allowed.
I'll try the other tack (removing restrictions and then reinstating them) instead.

One other bit of strangeness -- I removed the domains in "Limited Email Domains That Actually Work," but it wasn't until I removed both them and the entries in "Limited Email Registrations" that I was actually able to create an account for a gmail address.

I'm no longer able to reproduce any of these issues. Signups for users with gmail addresses (and other non-whitelisted domains) are working fine both (a) when using the non-CUNY signup code, and (b) when created by a super admin in the Dashboard. See #1372 https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/51cf007c6593ab8d. If the problem persists, please reopen with details.
