Bug #4006
closedCan't post topic in two different forums

Description
This morning, I added a few forum topic in the group site for the Library Technology Subcommittee of the CUNY Committee on Academic Technology:
After I did that, I wanted to post the same thing on the forum for the CUNY Committee on Academic Technology. I went into edit mode in the original topic and copied all the text to my clipboard. Then I went to the forum for the CUNY Committee on Academic Technology, started a new topic, and then pasted in the text from my clipboard. I gave the topic a title and clicked the submit button. The next thing I saw was an error message that said:
ERROR: Duplicate topic detected; it looks as though you’ve already said that!
At the suggestion of Matt Gold, I tried to do this again this afternoon and got the same error message.

Sorry. I put the wrong URL in for the topic I was trying to post in two different forums. This the correct one:

Thanks for the report, Stephen.
Our forum software has duplicate protection built in, and it counts as duplicate any two topics that are by the same author and have the exact same content. Because you were copying the exact content into the second forum, it was identified by this algorithm as a duplicate. So the behavior that you experienced is by design, and I'm wary of changing it, as it's an important protection against certain kinds of technical problems.
The simple workaround for the time being is to slightly modify/amend the topic content when posting in multiple places. Prepending a sentence along the lines of "Cross-posted from group x - apologies for any duplicate notifications" would ensure that the content was not identified as a duplicate, and would have the added benefit of apologizing for duplicate notifications :)
We are working on a feature for the next major version of the Commons that will provide a cross-posting interface during forum topic creation. When in place, this interface will be a better solution to the current problem. See http://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/3178. This feature should be available in mid- to late-May.
I'm going to mark this ticket as a duplicate of #3178. Stephen, if you'd like to follow progress on that ticket, please feel free to do so.

Thanks, Boone! I just posted my forum message by adding a sentence at the start that distinguishes it slightly from the original version.
