Feature #4082
closedEvents Calendar: Expose sitewide events listings
0%
Description
Following up on our last Subcommittee meeting of spring 2015, we should add a link to our site navigation that prominently displays the Events Calendar. We might even make it part of the homepage -- perhaps a widget showing upcoming events where the featured video is currently to the right of the slider?

Assigning to Sam for consideration. I'd say we probably don't want to put the sitewide calendar front-and-center until there's a fair number of public events. When we think we're ready for that - and when we have a sense how to expose it in the navigation - we can move it into a minor release.

I don't mind delaying it for a few weeks, but I disagree that we should wait until 1.9 for this. The sitewide calendar, even if empty, will help surface the feature more generally and perhaps people will be motivated to fill it up. Perhaps, if it is very empty at first, we can design some help text that will point people to documentation and encourage them to add events.

Yes, I said we should do it in a minor release, but we can't do it until various decisions have been made. I was just putting it in 1.9 so it wasn't sitting in the no-milestone pile.

I think step 1 is to add it into the navigation as a tab called 'Events' that falls between 'Sites' and 'Wiki'. The site-wide calendar, as of now, is this: http://commons.gc.cuny.edu/events/, which needs a little styling and added functionality before we release it to the world.
At minimum, it should be clear how to add an event to the calendar yourself. The easiest workflow there would be: click 'add event' > (if logged in) My events/New event > publish event. That would still allow users to attach an event to groups, so I don't think it needs to be much more complicated than that. Thoughts?
We had also talked about adding filters to the site-wide calendar, but it seems like we should hold off on that until there's content to inform what our filters are.
Once we work this out, I have ideas of how to integrate it into the homepage.
Adding Seth as a watcher -- Seth: can you let us know if there's any useful stats regarding the featured video on the homepage, both pre- and post-login?

Sam, do we want to do any of this for 1.9? It's too late to build anything new for the homepage, but adding something to the nav is trivial from a technical point of view, so we can squeeze it in if you think it's worthwhile. (I am pretty impressed with the number of events being shown on http://commons.gc.cuny.edu/events/.)

I would love to add it to the nav/homepage soon, but I don't think this is the right time. We should let 'Papers' be the new navigation item for this release and consider adding 'Events' in in the coming months. Maybe when we're ready to remove 'Wiki' so there's not way too many items competing for space (especially on mobile).

As per Sam's feedback, I'm going to move this to a maintenance release for 1.9 until we've decided when we want to introduce the "Events" nav tab.
Let me know if 2.0 is more appropriate for this.

I think there's general agreement that we should only add Events to the sitewide nav once the space has been cleared by the deprecation of Wiki. See #4140.

Woohoo! This is important. This is for the next release, right? If so, we can publicize it then.
