Description

Hi Boone,

Is it possible to switch URLs between the careerplan and the careerplantest sites? The careerplantest is looking just the way I'd like it to look.

Let me know.

Thanks,

Jenny

Just to clarify, I also do not want to corrupt a production site, just in case export and switching themes does not work.

  • Target version set to Not tracked

I can try to do this.

Just to clarify, I also do not want to corrupt a production site, just in case export and switching themes does not work.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. My plan was as follows (the site currently known as careerplan is A, the site currently known as careerplantest is B):

1. Move A to a temporary domain (eg careerplantemp) to free up the careerplan domain. At this time, careerplan.commons.gc.cuny.edu will be offline.
2. Move B to careerplan
3. Move A to careerplantest

When you say you don't want to "corrupt a production site", what do you mean? Do you mean you don't want me to destroy the production site?

Sorry, Boone. Perhaps corrupt was too strong. I just meant I didn't want to totally lose the careerplantest production site in the transfer. Just in case something got screwed up. But, your plan of switching them sounds like a good one. Do you have a sense of how long careerplan will be offline during the transfer?

Many thanks.

Jenny

Probably only a minute or two, as long as nothing goes wrong. When you are ready, give me the go-ahead, and then hands off the site until I'm finished.

Great! No time like the present. We are all off the site.

OK, starting the process now.

Sorry for the delay here. I ended up building a tool to automate some of the steps in the process, and ran into a couple odd bugs along the way.

The switch should be complete. Please check both sites.

The new tool is part of the wp-cli-cac package: https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/wp-cli-cac/commit/129a152e4e5b117e6d21c75554725aafd1e17b36

Cool, thanks!

Ray, FYI, the new wp cac change_domain tool does not flush the persistent cache - wp-cli can't access it - so you have to do it manually, by dropping wp_cache_flush_site( array( $site_id ) ) somewhere where it'll run during a normal pageload. Lame, but better than doing all this manually.

Hi All,

When I visit http://careerplan.commons.gc.cuny.edu I am redirected to the CAC homepage

The domain name had been changed back in the database.

Jenny or Stephen, have either of you made changes in the last hour to the site? Can you summarize what they were for me, to see whether this is a bug, or some sort of error on your part?

I did not make any changes

Hi Boone,

I started to fix a few places where the image links no longer worked. Uploaded some media files. Then, Changed some html on one of the pages. But, it was working for me.

Then I had some students come in and needed to meet with them. Figured I would check in later. Sorry if I screwed it up!

It looks like the CareerPlan site is back up with the new theme.

Just for the record, the changes I had made to the site earlier this afternoon involved uploading media and editing this page to get the photos back up:

http://careerplan.commons.gc.cuny.edu/about-2/people/

I was planning on doing more of this tomorrow. Let me know if I should hold off.

Thanks,

Looks nice, Jenny.

A few minor thoughts:

-- the title of the site still reads "Career Plan Redone With Library Theme"
-- you may want to see if you can add just a bit more vertical padding between the CAC header and the top of the GC logo
-- if you wish, you can hide the CAC footer with some CSS; let me know if you are interested in that
-- the thumbnails here are broken -- http://careerplan.commons.gc.cuny.edu/about-2/careerplangc/
-- I find the righthand menu a bit hard to read (light blue on gray). Such low contrast in design is not great for accessibility, so you might seek to increase the contrast in colors there just a bit
-- your "request an appointment" page leads to a google form. That can be embedded on a Commons page if you wish -- see this example - http://cunyitconference.commons.gc.cuny.edu/submit-a-proposal/

If you'd like to work with a digital fellow on some of this, please let me know

Thanks, Jenny. You should go ahead and continue to make updates, as you see fit. I don't anticipate any more problems - it's likely that any weirdness was due to something I unwittingly did, not you. Please do let me know immediately if you see any problems with redirects, etc; switching WP site URLs is something we traditionally have not done on the Commons, because it's so subject to bugs, so you're acting as a guinea pig for a new procedure.

Thanks, Boone, for all your help. Glad to be the guinea pig. I hope it's something that's useful to others in the future.

Matt, thanks for the feedback. Stephen has already changed some of these. I'll be working on some of the others.
