Description

Akismet was originally in mu-plugins because of an ugly hack we once had to do in order to register an API key across a WPMU network. When we upgraded to WP 3.0, we got the non-mu-plugins version of Akismet back, which some users appear to have activated a long time ago. On those blogs, WP was trying to load Akismet twice, and the blog was whitescreening as a result.

Since our original hack, Akismet has been upgraded many times. One of the improvements allows you to define the API key as a constant. So there's no longer any need to have it in mu-plugins.
