Description
We've had a report that the Commons is loading extremely slowly over the MEC network. The problem appears to be related to the MEC/GC server connection.
Updated by Matt Gold about 15 years ago
A tech fellow there is trying to get people to use the site, but they don't want to because it's taking an agonizingly long time for it to load.
Boone and I have been communicating with the Tech fellow about this. Here's what we've discovered:
-- Other sites seem to load fine on this network
-- The slowness is not limited to any one OS or browser, or to wifi vs. wired
-- We asked the tech fellow to load another site on the same server (http://www.ashp.cuny.edu/) and it was also very slow
So our guess is that there is something going on between the MEC network and that particular GC server. I have no idea what it could be.
Perhaps we could discuss the problem here and then contact a server admin at MEC. Here is the contact info I have for the MEC sys admin:
Mohammad Nematollahi
mo@mec.cuny.edu
718.270.6262
Thanks in advance for your help with this.
Best,
Matt

We should have somebody at MEC run a traceroute to the server. I can't remember how to do this in windows (maybe start menu -> run -> traceroute commons.gc.cuny.edu). On the mac, it can be done from terminal in applications/utilities by typing "traceroute commons.gc.cuny.edu"
The results may tell us where along the route things are slowing down.

Continued communications with MEC CIS. They are seeking help from CUNY CIS and have promised to update us soon. I will check in with them again in a week if I don't hear anything.

- Status changed from Assigned to Resolved
Success! The MEC CIS team has solved this issue, which apparently had to do with attempts by the Academic Commons to resolve MEC's dynamic IP address. Thanks to everyone for their work on this.

Matt,
It seems that we're having a similar problem at BMCC. I was contacted by someone who was trying to access the commons from inside BMCC's campus and was bothered by the slowness.I tend to only use the commons at home so I only learned about it just before I was leaving for the weekend so I couldn't do much investigating on my own. I did a quick screencapture to document the slowness [[http://www.screencast.com/t/rTfVGEP1M]]
I'm wondering if this is perhaps the same problem that happened at MEC? Let me know how I can help an investigation into this.

Hi Chris,
Thanks very much for the heads-up. Do you think that you might be able to speak to the server admins at BMCC? I wonder whether we might put them in conversation with the MEC team to see whether it is a similar problem. Please let me know what you think.
Best,
Matt

Sure I can get the process started. It may be slow like your experience with MEC. Can you give the info of the people at MEC that I should talk with?
