I just watched a user on a group invite page, trying to use the search box there to look up a name and invite someone to the group. Putting in the member's name made it look like a search was taking place (a spinning wheel came up), but produced no result -- the full list of members remained there, as before.

I noticed, too, that member avatars don't show up in the drop down list
