Feature #8935
closedCreate a better-looking null state for Portfolios without About You sections
0%
Description
When a user declines to fill out About You info on the profile, we just leave that space blank, which makes the profile look unfinished. Can we collapse that section in some way so that it looks better if users have not filled in that info? Please see the attached screenshot of an example
I'm assigning to Paige, but Paige, please check in with Chris about this.

I agree with you that it does look unfinished when all of that space is left blank.
I wonder if it's an easier lift to add some sort of default filler text rather than collapsing the space. Adding filler text that is formatted to match what a filled out profile looks like (see autofill png) fills the space and provides an context to the profile.
Condensing this area without changing the placement structure too much (to the right hand side avatar within a profile) I think the space still looks somewhat unfinished (see condensed.png).
I'm happy to explore the idea of moving and spreading the info (avatar and edit buttons) but I think this is a bit more work on the dev. team end and it changes the conventions of the profiles (see condensed2.png).
What do you think?

Thanks, Paige, for thinking about this. I think we should keep noodling around with it. I understand your suggestion of putting in some default filler text, but I think it won't look good if many people have that text up there publicly. I do think that it might be a good idea for people to see that when they are logged in and looking at their own profile if our dev team can do that.

Yes, it's pretty easy to add content that is visible only to the user. Do you want to suggest some?

Great, and thank you. I'd go with a modified version of Paige's autofill.
for the Title:
Add a title here
for the short description:
Add a short description of yourself here
That's suggested language -- I'm very open to improvements!

"Add a title here" doesn't really tell the person what's going on. I guess I'd suggest something more like:
[Click here] to add your title.
[Click here] to add a short description of yourself.
where both of those links lead you into edit mode.

- Status changed from Assigned to Reporter Feedback
- Assignee changed from Paige Dupont to Boone Gorges
Added in https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/1706fac9ac0c4d4469a5f98f1c569f59b03d5630, and screenshots attached with various combinations. The "Click here" language doesn't appear if you're looking at someone else's profile, or if you're on Edit mode - you just see blank space, as you currently do on the Commons.
Let me know if this is enough for 1.13, or if there are other mods you'd like.

Great! Thanks, Boone -- this should be enough for 1.3
