Creative Commons license needs to be updated?

As discussed on the dev call today, I've set this ticket regarding the change to v4 of the Creative Commons license to the 1.14 milestone.

For those that haven't read the first post yet, I just found another article outlining the new changes in v4, which is a little easier to follow:

As for what this change would entail on the CAC site itself, here are the spots on the Commons where we reference the CC license:

Site footer
Terms of Service block on the Registration page
Terms of Service page located under "About > Terms of Service"

We also talked about doing some form of publicity around the change. Apart from the regular news entry and slide on the homepage, is there anything else we want to do to inform users of the change?

Bumping this ticket - Matt, could you review Ray's comment above and let us know what you think needs to be changed? The technical changes are pretty trivial, but if documentation or publicity needs to be prepared, Steve and team will need to know about it soon.

Thanks, Boone. The thing that's tricky about this is that we should probably let all members know if there is a change to the Terms of Service. I don't want to bottleneck or delay this process, but I do wonder whether we should take some time to review the TOS, privacy policy, and mission statement in the coming months and to add refreshed versions of all three to the site.

The counterpoint to that would be that if we are just bumping the license number, that is a minor change and maybe doesn't warrant a site-wide email. I've added Maura and Megan as watchers; do you have time to weigh in?

In last month's meeting, we talked about perhaps updating the Creative Commons license to use the latest version.

Currently, in the footer, we link directly to the Creative Commons license due to changes in #10658. I brought up the possibility of creating an interstitual License page (eg. commons.gc.cuny.edu/license/), which would explain the default license of the Commons. This page could also be used to explain what the Creative Commons is and what licensing entails.

Let's use this ticket to discuss if this is what we want to do when we update our CC license. Or I can split up the interstitual License page into a separate ticket.

maybe add "Except where otherwise noted" with "noted" being a link to an internal CAC page that explains our approach to licensing

Ping Matt. Just wanted to know your thoughts about bumping the Creative Commons license in the site footer from v3 to v4.

We don't necessarily have to do this for 1.15, but it might be good for documentation purposes.

Hi All -- I just spent some time searching for things to consider when updating a site's cc license but I did not find much of anything either in the CC help pages, the CC wiki, or an internet search. I propose that we update the site license to v4 in 1.15. Let's be sure to include "Unless otherwise noted" though. Thank you, Ray, for your attention to this!
