Hi Scott,

From IT:

Before submitting a mapping request please make sure that 1. The domain name actually has a DNS record and 2. The DNS record is pointing to 146.96.128.200.

As far as I see, there is no DNS record for womenwritingwomenslives.org.

There is a DNS record for www.womenwritingwomenslives.org, but it is pointing to 198.105.254.228

Can you check in with Kate on this and also make this check in the future before requesting that I contact IT? thanks. please update this ticket once Kate has adjusted her setttings

Hi - I need some help on this - Kate has GoDaddy - Here are the instructions she got from them - https://au.godaddy.com/help/add-a-cname-record-19236

So there are 3 fields to enter - host, points to, and time to live. Initially I asked her to enter host="" and points to commons.gc.cuny.edu. But the UI does not accept "" as host, so I asked her to switch the fields - host = commons.gc.cuny.edu and points to = "@".

How should it be configured?

Sorry - host = @ is not accepted by Go daddy.

If I understand https://au.godaddy.com/help/add-a-cname-record-19236 correctly, then:

Host: commons.gc.cuny.edu
Points to: @
TTL: 1 hour (or whatever the default is)

Okay - thanks. That is what I told her to do. Let me double check with her. Maybe she has a typo or something.

Hi Boone - It doesn't seem that there are any typos. Kate has set up the CNAME as recommended. Here is Kate's response:

"When I try to visit the site, I am getting the message

www.womenwritingwomenslives.org’s server IP address could not be found.

DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN"

Do you think this Is an issue on the Go Daddy end or the Commons end?"

I don't think there are any typos. I looked at her screenshot and everything looks okay.

Any suggestions?

I searched past issues and saw this one https://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/3753

Does she need to create an A Record too?

Sure, that sounds like it's worth a try.

Hi Boone - Okay, Kate has added an A record host="www" and points to = commons IP address. Can you see if it looks right?

Hi Scott - I don't see DNS entries for the bare domain, just for www:

https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=a%3awomenwritingwomenslives.org&run=toolpage
https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=a%3awww.womenwritingwomenslives.org&run=toolpage

In the past, Lihua has requested that we only map bare domains to the Commons, with www redirected to the bare domain. This is required for our automated SSL setup.

I believe this means:
1. For the A record, enter @ for the Host instead of www https://www.godaddy.com/help/add-an-a-record-19238
2. If www.women... access is required, create a redirect from www to https://women... https://www.godaddy.com/help/manually-forwarding-or-masking-your-domain-or-subdomain-422

Hi Boone - Okay she has mapped the bare domain to the commons. Can you look to see if it looks good. I assume she should also have the cname record "@" mapped to the commons as well.

Hi - If this one is okay, can we ask IT to do the mapping?

Thanks for your patience as I get back through the Monday queue.

The A record looks like it should work.

Matt, can you please be in touch with Lihua?

Thanks Matt!

Hi Boone - when I go to womenwritingwomenslives.org in Safari I get message that the Commons is down. In other browsers I get message that Kate doesn't have SSL. I looked at the "Let's Encrypt" site, and it seems that GoDaddy does not support it. I don't think it's necessary to pay money for SSL. Can't you get a free certificate? They seem to offer SSL plans at $6.00/month.

You were seeing the "Commons is down" message because the mapping doesn't work until I've set it up in WordPress. I don't do this until IT sets up the mapping on their end. They now appear to have done so, so I have created the mapping in WP.

I am, however, getting a certificate issue. This suggests there's a configuration issue at the GC. Matt, can you let Lihua know that we're seeing ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID with this domain? Perhaps he has to reload the config after adding the cert.

Hi Boone - I know this was working before. But just got a note from Kate:

"The mapping worked briefly yesterday. Then I started getting the message "Your connection is not private." (Screenshot attached). This happened after I tried to do the forwarding, so I removed it. Now I'm getting the message "This site can't be reached" on Chrome and "Safari can't reach the page . . . server where this page is located can't be reached."

Any ideas?

Looks to me like the DNS has changed. https://mxtoolbox.com/SuperTool.aspx?action=a%3awomenwritingwomenslives.org&run=toolpage The A record was pointing to the Commons, but now it's not.
