Okay, that posted before I finished (or even started) writing the ticket.
I am planning to test the private comment and private grade on posts plugins that was discussed on Friday. I wasn't sure of the exact names of these plugins. Is it one plugin or two? What is the name of it? I want to make sure to download and install the correct one. Once I know which plugins to install I can test and report back here.

Sure thing. Here's the plugin, which handles both private comments and grades. (These can be decoupled, if you think it's better. https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-grade-comments/)

We can move this into a milestone if/when we decide it should be included on the Commons.

I have been testing this here: http://lbhdev.org/coursetest/
I think it would be great to include on the Commons and potentially as part of the teaching plugins package.
This is beyond the scope of the fall release but perhaps we could think through the possibilities making a connection between the functionalities of WP Grade Comments and Reckoning. Would it be possible for pull the private comments/grades facilitated by WP Grade comments into Reckoning's back end display so professors could see their private comments and grades on each post? This assumes that WP Grade comments stores and organizes this information, but since there is no back end settings area for this plugin (as far as i can tell)I couldn't see what kind of data was produced/saved. This might also be inching too close to a gradebook like feature and if so, we don't need to explore this.

Fine with me to include as-is on the Commons, if there are no other objections.
You're correct that there's no settings or overview panel for the plugin on the Dashboard, though note that grades, if available, do show up in a column at Dashboard > Posts and Dashboard > Comments, if available. This is not the same as the kind of summary that might be given by Reckoning, but it's something. In any case, some integration with Reckoning is probably possible - if you want to think about how this might work, please feel free to open a ticket.

Laurie, could I get your updated thoughts on this? We can do the following for 1.16:
1. Include the plugin, as-is, for activation on Commons sites
2. Add the plugin to the Teaching package
We cannot add any Reckoning integration for this release. See #11937.
Before pulling the trigger, can you confirm that you think that the plugin is useful enough for inclusion without #11937? And also confirm that you want 2 (for the plugin to bundled with Teaching plugins)?

Hi Boone,
Thanks for following up (sorry i missed your last comment I was not watching this ticket).
Yes, I do think this plugin is useful enough to be included on the commons as is, without #11937. And yes, I do think it should be included in the teaching plugins bundle.

Thanks, Laurie. I've added the plugin to the 1.16 release in https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/e6392241ff166b6c5845d614a5f87913988398c2.
Ray, could you please add the plugin to Teaching package? I looked at the way plugins are defined in cac-plugin-packages but wasn't 100% sure the purpose of download_url - it looks like this is not used on the Commons, but I wanted your confirmation before moving forward. I'm proposing the following for the 'description' text: "Allows instructors to include grades with their comments on student posts, and to provide private feedback in the form of comments visible only to the student author." (Laurie, please feel free to suggest better text than that if you'd like.)

Hmm, I know the plugin has the word grade but I am a little weary of the "grade" language in the description because of possible FERPA conflicts.
Maybe something more vague such as:
"Allows instructors to provide private feedback on posts in the form of comments that are visible only to instructor and the student author. Private comments also offer the option to include numerical feedback on students' posts."
Thoughts?

Ha, you're beyond my pay grade (no pun intended). I defer to the wisdom of the group.

wp-grade-comments
has been added to the Teaching package - https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/commit/8f5842ccbf0146035990d1391ba00ccdc3979390
You're correct that the download_url
parameter isn't being used currently. I was thinking for the future because if the cac-plugin-packages
plugin were to be used outside of the Commons, at the moment, it is assumed that all the necessary plugins are already installed on the site. See what I wrote in the inline doc here

Excellent, this makes sense. Thanks!
