Description

From Matthew Knip via ZenDesk:

"Matt Gold suggested that I write to you. Several years ago I created a site on the commons
https://vanbuskirk.commons.gc.cuny.edu
and set the reading/visibility
https://vanbuskirk.commons.gc.cuny.edu/wp-admin/options-reading.php
to "Allow search engines to index this site." However, a key word that appears over and over on the site—"chickenship"—is apparently invisible to searching. Every time I've run a search on that word, which is a key word in my dissertation, NOTHING comes up. Which means, at least to me, that Google search engines, spiders, or whatever is out there searching/indexing the web is not seeing or indexing my site. I'd like this problem fixed. Do you have suggestions?"

Can you get more clarification on what "run a search" means? Does it mean using the search box on https://vanbuskirk.commons.gc.cuny.edu/? Does it mean searching the Commons somehow - perhaps using the "Google Custom Search" at the top of the Commons home page? Does it mean searching Google, perhaps narrowing down the URL as in https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-google-coop&cx=004300494496351942816%3Avifba_gegbu&ei=dRmNXd2iBOKIggecjYqYDg&q=site%3Avanbuskirk.commons.gc.cuny.edu+chickenship&oq=site%3Avanbuskirk.commons.gc.cuny.edu+chickenship&gs_l=psy-ab.3...24333.28592..29089...0.2..0.212.1121.2j6j1......0....1j2..gws-wiz.......0i71.rgGwKg3QUpY&ved=0ahUKEwidscqNpO_kAhVihOAKHZyGAuMQ4dUDCAo&uact=5

my understanding is that he is talking about a public search of google for the word "chickenship"

so, maybe we make that point to him, show him some materials related to SEO, and to how google works?

Any resources I can point him to about improving the score?

CC Scott, in case he's got Commons-specific info.

There are trillions of sites on the web with advice about how to improve SEO. https://goinswriter.com/website-seo-tips/ is a simple one I found. Much of the technical work is done by WordPress. But in the end, the bottom line is that Google must see you as authoritative, and it judges authority based on incoming links from other reputable sites.
