I'm getting this ticket going for further conversation about halting new bbPress plugin installations (or forbidding it outright), and figuring out the best way to push Site admins to start a Group instead for their forum and similar needs. The bbPress and Group features are very similar anyway, and bbPress has become hard to maintain.

Boone and Matt agree this makes technical sense and will help drive people to the work we've been doing to improve Groups. What is the best way to make site admins aware of group functionality, especially forums, and limit frustration when they're looking for such functionality in plugins?

We should also determine what to do about current bbPress installs. Might any make a switch to groups? Laurie, what is the reliance right now on bbPress for teaching instances? Below is a list from Boone of current bbPress intalls on Commons sites:
