Student Numbers for Annual Report

Description
HI Boone,
We are trying to estimate # of students in courses on the Commons for the 2019-2020 annual report.
Could we pull:
- number of users joining as "student" in Spring 2019 and Fall 2020
- # of users on sites and groups with "courses/teaching" metadata in Sp 2019 and F2020
Would pulling these numbers be possible? Illuminating? If you think there might be a better method or data to pull to get a sense of # CUNY students on the commons, let me know.

6530 - This is a straightforward query.
- # of users on sites and groups with "courses/teaching" metadata in Sp 2019 and F2020
This is more complicated. Sites and groups are often linked, so if I count site/group users, there will be duplicates. Maybe the logic is: find all groups and count their users; then, find all sites that aren't linked to any of those groups, and count their users? Does that sound correct?
Yes, this sounds good. Your logic for counting users in Groups and then counting users on uncoupled sites makes sense.

Hey Laurie - I'm putting this together but I just realized that I may have been confused about the requested date periods. You asked for Spring 2019 and Fall 2020, but these are non-consecutive. Did you mean Fall 2019-Spring 2020 (academic year 19-20)? Or Spring 2020-Fall 2020 (calendar year 2020)?

Assuming that you meant academic year 2019-20, here are some numbers:
[group_count] => 153
[group_member_count] => 1598
[site_count] => 279
[site_member_count] => 1862
group_count is the number of 'teaching' groups created during this time, and 'group_member_count' a sum of all their memberships. If a user is a member of more than one of these groups, they'll be counted more than once - I'm counting group-memberships rather than unique users. site_count is the number of 'teaching' sites that are not linked to a 'teaching' group.

Sounds good. I have the script if you ever need to do this again for a different date set or a different "purpose" (wp-cli-scripts/query-teaching.php)

Hi Laurie -- if you have a few minutes to convert these numbers to prose, I can add them to the report, which I haven't quite finalized yet. I might just release the report on Monday at this point.

In the 2019-2020 academic year, faculty launched 153 teaching groups with 1598 members in these groups. In the same year, 279 teaching sites were created with 1862 faculty and student users on these sites.
