Matt, can you give a hint about where you'd like them to appear, and how you'd like them to look?
Ray, I had originally just written a little bit of HTML in a text widget, and put it on the sidebar for the News page. (See #1258, #1561.) At some point, our theme barfed and the widgets were reset, so I lost that HTML. I was thinking it might be nice to register a shortcode that spits out the HTML, so that it could be put wherever (or the callback could be called directly in a template file). Can I ask you to work something up? #1258 has the proper links (note that the G+ and FB links are corrected further down in the thread).

I've attached a screenshot of what I have on my local box.
Is this what you guys had in mind?
The Facebook Like button would like the CUNY FB page, not the Commons homepage. If you'd like me to change this to the Commons homepage, let me know.

Thank you, Chris -- I think that mockup looks great. And if, as I suspect, the difference between liking the Commons FB page and liking the Commons itself involves the difference between keeping the interaction on FB and letting FB's tracking codes infiltrate the Commons, then, yes, let's have the button like the Commons FB page.

Matt - you said "Chris" and I think you meant "Ray" :)
Also, I guess these buttons are different from the ones I was remembering. I recall static icons that just linked to the pages in question, as opposed to these action buttons (Like, Follow, +1). I think that I'm remembering the buttons as they appeared in the sidebar of the News page (see #1561). If it's not too much trouble, and if you go with the shortcode method, maybe you could have a shortcode parameter like
format="links"that would toggle between two different versions.
Thanks, Ray!

Oops -- thanks, Ray. Sorry for the mixup!

How's the attached screenshot?
16x16 icons come from:

Boone, do we want other people to manage shortcodes? If so, I recommend the Post Snippets plugin:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/post-snippets/
Otherwise, I'll just leave the shortcode in /bp-nelo/functions.php.
Do I commit to the 1.3.x branch?

For the FB Like button, we can have it like either the FB page or the Commons homepage, your preference. There's no extra FB tracking code.

I like! But you should wait for Matt's feedback.
Go ahead and put this in the 1.3.x branch. I'll move it to an appropriate milestone.

Use the following shortcode for social links:
[cac-social-icons]
Use the following shortcode for social buttons (Follow, FB Like, +1):
[cac-social-icons format="buttons"]
I don't have access to mark tickets as resolved, so Boone or Matt will have to do that!

I thought it was broken until I remembered that my hosts file blocks all content from *.facebook.com :)
Looks great, Ray! Going to reassign to myself so that I remember to implement on the live site at release time.
I'll reconfigure the Redmine settings so that you're able to close tickets properly in the future. Thanks!
