Description

The Sydney theme is the theme for the Conference Template, and it now has a pretty significant update that seems to not be available for themes that are using it already. Here's the description:

Sydney Header Update
This version of Sydney comes with a new and improved header. Activate it by clicking the button below and you can access new options.

Note 1: this upgrade is optional, there is no need to do it if you are happy with your current header.

Note 2: your current header customizations will be lost and you will have to use the new options to customize your header.

Note 3: this upgrade refers only to the header (site identity and menu bar). It does not change any settings regarding your hero area (slider, video etc).

Note 4: Please take a full backup of your website before upgrading.

Want to see the new header options before upgrading? Check out our documentation.

I'm trying to support a user who used it to create https://bisexual.commons.gc.cuny.edu/. I don't know how she got to where she is exactly, but if this update were somehow available, her problems would be much easier to fix. Does anyone have experience with this?

If it is not possible, that is okay for this particular use case, but is there a way to update the conference template going forward?

Thanks, all!

Hi Marilyn,

Can you explain the problem a bit more? Is the header problem with the Conference site template or with the bisexual.commons.gc.cuny.edu site?

If the problem is with the Conference site template and we want to use the new Sydney header for the template, perhaps someone can go into the Conference site template admin (https://conftemplate.commons.gc.cuny.edu/wp-admin) and enable the new header? I'm adding Laurie as a watcher since she helped to configure the Conference site template (see #13993).

Is the issue that the bisexual.commons.gc.cuny.edu site wants to revert to the older header format? If so, let me know. Apparently this might be possible: https://wordpress.org/support/topic/disastrous-header-update-destroyed-my-site/

Yes - the problem is with the Conference site template and we want to use the new Sydney header for the template. Laurie, can you do that? I've never created a template but am willing to help of course.

No, it is not the case that the bisexual.commons.gc.cuny.edu site wants to revert to the older header format. That is what is active there and there are many problems. I think that site in fact needs the new version of Sydney, but if that isn't possible I will guide her with building a new site.

Really appreciate the help, Ray!

I went into the conference template and updated the header on the template site. However, I do not think this will not effect the bisexual sites since the site has already been created.

I have been using the new Sydney theme on another site and I had access to the new header, even before I updated the template site.

Is the user trying to use the new Sydney header? If so they may have access already. They can use the Customize view to change the header options ( see screenshot from the site I am using Sydney on.

OK, the person who ran https://bisexual.commons.gc.cuny.edu/ is now recreating it on https://bisexuality.commons.gc.cuny.edu/. She had other problems with the headers and I could not diagnose them quickly. She seems happy with this solution. Thanks, Laurie for updating the template!

I think this can be closed.
