Description

A user was confused as to how to move the information from the previous College and Title fields to the new Positions Widget (actually the user didn't realize that the positions widget was the way to go). Here is the confusion:

I've been trying to edit the "title" field that carried over from the old Commons profile but can't seem to find it. Every time I press "edit" it takes me to the public profile edit function, which only has "College" and "Academic Interests" listed.

From there, I've tried clicking on "commons profile" where I see the title field again, but each time I press edit from that page, it takes me back to the public profile page. Am I missing something?

Right now I have things listed under "title" that I would like to move to the newly available fields.

This should be addressed as part of issue #2742

I'm proposing a couple of changes here to make this more understandable for users:

  1. moving College and title to the bottom of the list
  2. greying the labels
  3. adding a message explaining the change and that they should use positions instead

I'm attaching a screenshot of what that might look like and a College-Title-Message.txt file with some HTML and CSS.

Looks good, Chris. A few thoughts:

-- I think we should remove "follow me online" stuff from the Commons tab because it replicates material available in the profile header, etc. It's also not strictly related to Commons-specific functionality

-- Can one dismiss the college/title message? Does it appear only once? Can/should we make it more intrusive, ie., a pop-up that needs to be dismissed? It seems a bit subtle to me right now. Maybe that's good, but visually, it doesn't read as an "alert" to me because it's not visually differentiated enough from the rest of the page.

-- really like the graying-out of deprecated fields

Many thanks for your work on this.

Thanks Matt.

I'm OK with removing the "follow me online" from the Commons tab. The second reason, that it's not related to Commons functionality is good, since pretty much everything is available one the portfolio tab now. Probably not high priority so it can wait until after 1.5.1

Some good questions. I was thinking that in the interest of simplifying things now we would just leave it up and then maybe in the future remove it if the person has added positions. I am OK leaving it more subtle since you can use the profiles without this and it is more of explanatory text than an alert. I left the colors the same as for the message on the Public Portfolio page so that there was some consistency with the messages.

That said, if you or others think that it should be more prominent then we can do some other things to make it more visible (changing colors or a modal overlay that has to be dismissed.

After corresponding with one of our community members, I realized that even if one did want to edit the college and title you can't. Bruce Rosenbloom has a misspelling he wanted to correct, but there's no way currently for him to do so. I wrongly assumed that once you completed the new positions you wouldn't be able to see the old title and position information, but it appears in the Commons profile. Are we going to get rid of these fields or merge them? Apologies if I am missing something that should make it clearly obvious to me. :)

Hi Sarah,
The College and Title Fields are uneditable. We are leaving the information there for now so people don't lose information but if they want to make changes they need to move to the new Positions widget.

The message in the screenshot above is meant to help clear up the confusion. That message is not there right now and there is some confusion.

Take a look at the proposed change and let me know if you think it's adequate or needs some changes in visuals or wording to make it clearer.
Thanks,
Chris

Matt, did you want a version with different colors or functionality still?

Boone, I'm good to go with
  1. the message as is
  2. remove Follow Me Online
  3. move College and Title to bottom and grey out

If you have time I would add one more thing which is to change the message for people who have already added a position widget. I'm attaching a revised .txt file. I'm OK with pushing that change to a different ticket and later release if it's too much extra work.

For those who don't want to read the .txt file the messages would be:

The Commons has made changes to the way your positions are tracked to better allow those who hold multiple positions to list them. As part of that change the College and Title fields have been deprecated and you can no longer edit them.

Please add your positions using the new Positions widget. <a href="http://cdev.gc.cuny.edu/members/cstein/profile/edit/">Click here</a> to enter Edit mode and scroll down to the bottom of the page to add Positions.

AND IF HAVE POSITIONS

Thank you for using the new Positions widget. This replaces the old College and Title fields. They are shown here for informational purposes only while we make the transition and will be removed in the future.

remove Follow Me Online

This was a plugin setting. I've changed it on the live site.

Looks good. Boone, if it's easy to add a comma after "As part of that change," please do. Many thanks.
