Bug #7376
closedautomatic forwarding of blog posts not working
0%
Description
Antonia Levy, Instructional Technology and Multimedia Manager at SPS, reports:
"Starting in December, the automatic forwarding of blog (https://spsfaculty.commons.gc.cuny.edu/faculty-training/) posts to our group members stopped working. I have no idea why or how to fix that."
I asked which plugin she used. She replied:
"I don’t think it’s a plugin. We linked our wordpress site on the Commons (http://spsfaculty.commons.gc.cuny.edu) to the group we have on the Commons:
https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/sps-faculty-community-group-2003930391/"
Does this give you enough information, Boone?

Hi Marilyn - Apologies to you and to Antonia for the delay.
The problem here appears to be that the privacy settings at https://spsfaculty.commons.gc.cuny.edu/wp-admin/options-reading.php are "Discourage search engines...". This setting prevents blog-related activity from being recorded in the activity stream, which in turn prevents it from being sent out to users via email.
Could you verify with Antonia that the setting was changed sometime after the December 12 post (which did successfully go to the activity stream)? That'll help to corroborate what I've said above.
It'd be nice if we were a bit more flexible about how the blog_public connection work, at least in the case of `0`. Perhaps, instead of bailing out of activity creation altogether, we could set hide_sitewide to true. This should prevent unauthorized users (like web crawlers) from seeing the content. Ray, does this seem sensible to you?

Scott reports that the site does not currently have the "discouraged" privacy setting. It did when I checked it a few weeks ago, so it's been changed in the interim. I will investigate to see whether I can pin down any non-posted activity items since the change. I'll move the ticket into the next milestone for tracking purposes.

Circling around here. It appears that a number of recent blog posts on spsfaculty have been synced properly to the activity stream, which suggests that the problem was indeed the blog's changed privacy settings.
I've opened #8075 to track my suggestion that we publish activity items for non-public posts.
