Description
When I feature a blog using the the featured content widget that CIC created for us, the default thumbnail image is the avatar of the blog author. A better option, if possible, would be to use images from the media gallery of the blog itself -- ie., images used in its posts. The way that Facebook handles this when sharing a link on the web is a good model to follow -- one can cycle through a series of options and choose the image one wants to go with the shared link (that, at least, is how I remember it working).
- Target version changed from 1.2.2 to 1.2.3
- Priority name changed from Normal to Low
- Target version changed from 1.2.3 to 1.3
This'll take development. Moving to 1.3 for now.
- Status changed from Assigned to Resolved
It looks like the code was designed to do this, but there were a few bugs keeping it from happening. I've cleaned it up a bit.
For the moment I'm just grabbing the first image that appears in the body of the post. Something more complex, like an image selector, will be many, many times more complex. If you think it's worth sinking dev time into it (I don't, but I also don't feel strongly about it), please open a new ticket (so that I can keep track of the fact that this portion was completed for 1.3)
Will do. Agree that cycling through images is gravy.
What happens if there is no image in the post?
It falls back on the avatar of the post author.
Just wanted to feature a new photo journal that is using the Commons to publish, and when I do so, Michael Smith's avatar shows up on the homepage: http://commons.gc.cuny.edu/
This is embarrassing for the site, and the fact that this was fixed 4 months ago in Github but is not yet up on the site points to a workflow problem here. We really need to fix this.
- Status changed from Resolved to Assigned
- Target version changed from 1.3 to 1.2.4.2
- Status changed from Assigned to Resolved
- Status changed from Resolved to Reporter Feedback
Just to be clear: This change makes it so that blog posts will have the first image used as the avatar. If you're featuring an entire blog, there is still no mechanism in place to pull something other than the admin's avatar, so it may not address this:
wanted to feature a new photo journal that is using the Commons to publish, and when I do so, Michael Smith's avatar shows up on the homepage
I've only just now realized that there is a distinction here. The ticket for the more general issue of blog avatars is at #1134 (see also #342). To implement the suggestion there (allowing the admin to select something from the blog's media library) is something that I won't be able to do today or tomorrow. I propose that, as a stopgap, I do the following: pull up the blog's most recent blog posts, and look through them one by one until I find an image, and use that image for the blog avatar. This is something I can write in a couple of minutes.
Let me know if you want me to proceed this way, or if you want to leave things as they are. Until then, I'll hold off on the 1.2.4.2 release.
Thanks, and absolutely, that would be great. Many thanks.

It looks great. Thanks so much, Boone.
