Description

Hi All,

A user is trying to use the hyper audio plugin and soundcloud audio links. They are experiencing issues with this plugin and included the attached screenshot) (waiting for more info)

I also test this plugin with soundcloud audio here: https://classtestbmcc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/hyperaudio-test/

I am unable to make the audio play when trying to use the plugin with Soundcloud, and I am unable to make a YouTube video play because it required the iframe embed code, which is stripped out.

Would it be possible to make this plugin functional with Soundcloud audio and YouTube videos? This plugin would be great for accessibility purposes and adding transcripts to audio and video

Thanks,
Laurie

In the case of your test site, it looks like the plugin doesn't use the correct embed code. It should simply let WP handle embeds rather than creating an iframe on its own. I'll investigate to see how hard a change this is. In any case, no iframe-pasting should be necessary - the plugin wants you to enter the URL into the 'src' attribute of the shortcode, not to paste the embed code from YouTube. I've already made some modifications to the plugin - see #17620 - and sent a pull request to the plugin maintainer, but I haven't heard any response yet. This doesn't make me hopeful that they'll accept any potential improvements.

In the case of the user's screenshot, it appears there may be something additional going on. Like, maybe the site is private but the user isn't logged in?

The Hyperaudio instructions can be found on the "Settings > Hyperaudio" page: https://classtestbmcc.commons.gc.cuny.edu/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=wp-hyperaudio%2Fhyperaudio-admin.php

When using Hyperaudio with YouTube, you need to set the Hyperaudio shortcode src to YouTube's embed URL. For example, https://www.youtube.com/embed/YOUTUBEID. Not https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOUTUBEID.

Soundcloud is similar; you will need the Soundcloud embed src URL. To do this for Soundcloud, you need to go to the Soundcloud page for your audio file. Next, click on "Share" and then "Embed". You'll see the <iframe> code. Only copy the src attribute from the <iframe> code and use it with the Hyperaudio shortcode.

I've just updated the post on the test site so both the Soundcloud and YouTube examples should now be working.

Whoa, good catch, Ray. Still, a shame that it's necessary to do this - it would be nice if WP could instead be responsible for generating the embed markup.

Laurie, can you let us know what you find?

Hi Ray,

Thanks so much for this! Confusing that a user has to cut down the link to just the src attribute but it works! I have passed this on to the person who is using it. They contacted the plugin developer on thier own and got a response, which was the exact same solution.

So thank you both!! This is great to know.

I have created a resource on Help about how to use the Hyperaduio plugin - https://help.commons.gc.cuny.edu/creating-transcriptions-with-the-hyperaudio-plugin/

I am confused why this post on my test site : https://aatwenty.commons.gc.cuny.edu/audio-transribe/ "works" (i.e follows along with the audio perfectly), and why my help post does not. My help post does generate all the captions and I can skip to different parts of the video, but it doesn't follow along as the audio progresses. Does it have to do with the theme?

I see that there is a compatibility issue with Embed Plus YouTube WordPress Plugin. There are many settings for this plugin - I tried to set some of the options but nothing worked. Should we just not use them both on the same site?

Are you using the YouTube Embed Plus plugin extensively on the Help site? If so, is there specific functionality in that plugin we require that isn't covered in a regular YouTube embed? If not, then I would consider disabling the plugin on the Help site.
