Description

It would be nice to be able to search for members within a group. Use case: a user sends a message to a whole group, mentioning a particular user. I realize I need to get in touch with that user to discuss something. I know she's in the group. I go to the group homepage following the link in the email notification and click on members. But the group has lots of members, and they are sorted in an unclear way (I think by the date joined, from most recent to last). It would be able to search or sort members so that one could easily find a particular person. A workable alternative exists - just go to the sitewide members page - but I think this would be a useful (not urgent) feature to have, too. UX implications, obviously, so I'm adding Chris as a watcher.

Any of these things can be done - I just need a mockup or an idea of how you want the UX to work. Assigning to Chris for preliminary ideas.

BuddyPress 2.0 included a search box inside the group members page:
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/921

Perhaps this needs to be ported back to our custom bp-nelo theme and be sufficient for our needs?

Ray, that sounds like a good idea. It seems like we could also add in the order-by as well. We could add it in to the #subnav div that appears to be empty currently. Would look something like the attached screenshot.

Thanks for the reminder, Ray. Given the time I spent on that ticket, you'd think I would have remembered it :-/ The end result is pretty much exactly what Chris has suggested.

There are a few problems with applying the patch directly. First, we are a child of bp-default, which means that we use bp-default's global.js. I've been testing with overriding it (and manually patching our override), and it works, but now we run into the problem that we are still using legacy user queries.

I'm going to mess with this a bit more to see if I can make it work for 1.7.

Looks great and works perfectly, Boone! A few questions:

1. Is autocomplete possible in the search box or is it not worth the time/server resources to implement that?

2. On the order-by dropdown, the choices are alpha, newest, and oldest. I'm not sure that the meaning of "newest" and "oldest" is clear. Does it refer to the date the member joined the group or the date the member created an account on the Commons?

It's a lot of work to implement for relatively little gain (most groups don't have many members). If that's something you're interested in, let's handle it on a separate ticket.

Date the member joined the group.

Sounds like this is working as expected, so I'm going to close. Thanks for the feedback.

Finally checked it out. It is good.

It does remind me that we need some default styling for form elements. It would be nice, but not essential, if the search box and button were the same height and the search box were a bit wider.
