Description

Another language tweak:

The narrowing options in My Commons are linking to the user's personalized areas within each of the areas of the site. Therefore, I think they should match the language used within each tab for the personalized section. This is especially needed to make it clear if 'Sites' will be pulling 'Favorited Sites' or 'My Sites'.

So the My Commons options that are now:
SHOW: (Everything) (Groups) (Sites) (Friends)

would become

SHOW: (Everything) (My Groups) (Favorited Sites) (My Friends)

I'm Having trouble with my wireless access so I'm going to post this without a full look at CDEV. Ray I'm adding you as a watcher to this because I have a question about what content is included in the sites filter. Here are the various pieces of content that could be included.

  • posts of sites where person is a user
  • comments of sites where person is a user
  • posts of sites person has favorited
  • comments of sites person has favorited

Which of these is currently included in the My Commons page?

I thought you were going to include all four. If we aren't I would like to see a target of that. If all four are included then "my sites " would be an appropriate name for the tab

Hi Chris,

Currently, the "Sites" filter supports only blogs you have favorited and not sites you are a member of.

I can look at supporting both options.

Okay, I've updated cdev and 1.7.x branch so the "Sites" tab is now the "My Sites" tab. The "My Sites" tab covers everything Chris mentioned above (#3526-1).

Please test and let me know what you think.

Tested and works for me! Thanks for making the update.

I would love input from others (Chris, Matt, Boone?) about whether or not putting 'My' in front of each of the My Commons filters makes sense. Ray has already implemented this change, but just to make sure before we consider this closed...

I just dug in deep enough to realize that the content in each of the My Commons filters matches the Activity section of a user's Commons Profile, which does not have 'My' in its filters. I don't feel like it's immediately obvious that My Commons is activity being pulled from the people, sites, and groups that are in their 'My Friends', 'My Sites', 'Favorite Sites', and My Groups'. I would like to find some way to make this more apparent, but maybe 'My' isn't the way to do that.

Anyone have strong feelings one way or the other?

Ray, the fact that you can make those updates quickly is a testament to the flexibility you've engineered. We should have well thought out naming and ui to match.

I would prefer to not use My as My Sites, My Groups and My Friends all currently exist and have different meanings in the dropdown under your avatar in the WP bar (in those cases they are names of sites/groups/friends and not an activity feed).

Also, the discussion around #2563 and naming and what should be favorited may influence this (including separating the favorite/follow sites to their own filter).

Samantha, you're right, currently My Commons is basically a slimmed down and redesigned version of My Activity. Despite the fact that there are some minor functional differences the main difference is that each user can only see her own My Commons page while a person's activity is viewable by everyone. There's other history there if you're interested.

"My Groups" and "My Friends" makes sense. Since the filter doesn't show a user's sites but rather sites that the user has favorited, I agree with Samantha's original suggestion that it should be labeled as "Favorited Sites." I wonder if we should put it further over to the right, though, since that naming convention is so different from others.

Based on feedback from Chris, currently, the "My Sites" filter includes both activity from sites that you are a member of as well as activity from sites that you are following.

Let me know if everyone's on board with this or if I should revert the filter back to followed sites functionality.

I like "My Sites" much better. I think we're sweating the semantics too much, especially given that that filter is now more inclusive (see Ray's last comment). People are going to click the link, see stuff from sites that are of interest to them, and be happy. It's unlikely that anyone's going to think "Hey, why does this site count as 'My'? I'm not a member of it", especially when they've made the explicit choice at some previous point to follow that blog.

Okay -- if it is showing not just favorited sites but also a user's sites, "My Sites" makes all the sense in the world and conforms to other entries to boot.

Make it so.*

A final parting shot. I agree broadly with Boone that people won't sweat the details too much and to turn it around they would also be just as happy clicking Sites; I don't have a problem with My Sites per se, I just don't like the fact that we have two identically named UI elements that give different info. Happy to be outvoted. Marking resolved.
