Activity Stream - People last active display
Added by Stephen Real over 7 years ago.

Description
Can we set a maximum amount of time that displays here? Some displays show people"Last Active" many years ago. Ideally, anybody who has been inactive for a month or more would get the same display: "Active more than a month ago".
While working on this, please note there are some buggy looking displays: "Last Active 1255 years ago" Which release of Word Press was running then, I wonder?
- Assignee changed from Boone Gorges to Raymond Hoh
- Target version set to 1.11
The buggy display appears to be due to the BP Relative Time plugin - I see the correct "since" time flicker before the JS kicks in. Ray, could you have a look? Go to /members/ and click the last page number.
Are we really sure that switching all old users to "Active more than a month ago" would be a net benefit? I can imagine plenty of situations where it's useful to know whether a user's been active within the last two months vs the last two years. I'd hate to sacrifice a genuinely useful feature just for the sake of making the site look more active when digging deep into pagination.
It's easy enough to implement a server-side cap on the "active ..." string, but we'll also need to do some client-side mods. Ray, can you let us know how hard that'd be?
Hi All,
I don't (yet) see a compelling rationale for changing this. Steve, were you thinking about this mostly for appearance's sake?

Hi all,
Thanks for looking into this. It is something that came up in conversation with Bret Maney at Lehman. He has been helping new faculty users set up Commons accounts, and he mentioned that this was a bit of a put off for new users to go looking through the lists of users only to discover that many (most?) had not "logged in" for years. He felt like for new users who were looking for people they may know to connect with, seeing so many log ins that are really old made the Commons seem "like a ghost town"--his words not mine. We thought that possibly, since so many people use the reply by email feature in the forums, maybe the information wasn't entirely reflective of the experience of the Commons. For example, would the last logged in date reflect email posts to group forums?
When I brought that feedback to the group on Friday, that's when we started noticing the real bugs. I was going to log in one day and just look around at these people pages for anecdotal evidence, but have not had the time.
Thanks so much for looking into this. Perhaps 1 month isn't long enough.. Maybe 6 months? I dunno... I'm wide open too different ideas, but wanted to give the earnest and well intentioned feedback consideration....
Best,
Lisa

The buggy date display issue reported by Steve is fixed in v1.10.15.
If we still want to change the last active date so it shows something like Active more than X ago
, this should be possible, just let me know if we still want such a thing.
Hi All,
one thought I've had -- and maybe this is one way to move towards the concerns raised by Bret -- is that perhaps we can show "last active" status only to logged in members. I'm not sure that info should be public anyway for non logged in members, and removing it would seem to be in the spirit of removing non-essential info from the public interface given increasing privacy conerns
I'd still advocate for providing accurate login data to logged-in members of the CAC, though.

Matt, I agree with you. I've opened a separate ticket #8074 for discussion. Let's close this one, since the bug is fixed.
