Group homepage or group forum page? See https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/the-group-for-group-admins/ (home) vs https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/groups/the-group-for-group-admins/forum/
Presumably, only group members will see this, correct?
Could this be as simple as expanding the "Find out how" link just above the new-topic form by default?

I had been thinking group homepage, and yes, maybe display only to logged-in group members
I do think we need to expand the "Find out how" and make it more visible, but I am hoping for something even more prominent in this case on the group homepage. Happy to have Erik review and to discuss

I was looking at this ticket last week, and mocked up a couple of alternatives to get the discussion started. Hopefully I'm talking about the same group homepage as you, Matt.
The first option might be to display the group e-mail address in the heading, right next to the group name, as I show in "group email in heading.png". On the one hand, the group e-mail address is very prominent this way; on the other it might scream out too much for users to click it and then get confused why their e-mail client suddenly opens up.
The second option, shown in "group email in subheadings.png," might be to display it in a sub-heading below the group description text, and along with other information like the group's "Quick Link." I'd consider making it the first item listed in order to make it the most prominent. It's a little less prominent than the first possibility, but might result in fewer accidental click-throughs.

Thanks, Erik! I like the second option, where it is not part of the header, myself. Boone, would it be possible to toggle the display of that bit of data based on whether the user is logged-in and/or a member of that group?
I do wonder if there are UX considerations to think about with regard to the showing/hiding of the email address. Erik, if you have opinions on that, please let me know. Would it be helpful to people to see that email address even if they weren't logged in or a member of that group?
Boone, would listing the email there publicly expose those addresses to spam?

Yes.

This seems like non-useful information IMO.

I believe that emails sent from addresses that are not associated with group members will simply be bounced back. Ray can confirm. Probably not a real spam or technical problem, but it feels like an odd user experience.

the use case I was thinking of for displaying to non-members was kind of an awareness issue. If you are browsing around groups, you might notice that email address and see that emailing the group is possible. but I'm not sure whether that "awareness" argument is too strong

I think displaying the e-mail address to non-group members might result in an awkward user experience, inviting not so relevant e-mails about topics like "what's the group for? can i join?," (at least from the perspective of existing group members), potential spam, and confusing bounced back messages as Boone mentioned.
BTW, I can't figure out how to add a comment here without quoting a previous comment. What am I missing in the interface? :p

Ha, it is not obvious. Use the "Edit" links near the top and bottom (with the pencil icon).

Bumping this ticket after being reminded by Ray on the call today.
To summarize, I'm proposing to add the new topic email address as a sub-heading on the Groups page -- below the description and above the quick link ("new topic email address.png").

Thanks for this, Eric. I wonder whether we should use a more active verb here, as "New Topic Email" may not make immediate sense to people? This is too wordy, but I think something like "Send email to this group: [address]" or "Group email address" or something

Matt, agreed - how about "Email the Group:" or "Start a New Topic from Email:"?
I prefer the first.

I think that adding the new topic address to the heading is fine, but additional info is still needed like mentioning that:
- the email address you registered with on the Commons is required
- the subject line will become the topic of the new group forum topic
Perhaps we can add a small "?" icon next to the heading that will link to the existing codex help article?

Great point, Ray. How about displaying the following in a tool tip when the "?" is hovered over:
- The email address you registered with on the Commons is required
- The subject line of your email message will become the topic of the forum post
Click to learn more
"Click to learn more" is a link that leads the user to the help article.
This way we cater to users who only need a few pointers (the tooltip), while still catering to those who need more (the full help article).

Sounds good to me, Erik.
What do you think about this tooltip script?
https://van11y.net/downloads/modal-tooltip/demo/index.html
It's accessible and uses ARIA.

Ray,
I like the look of that but wonder whether this style is consistent with how we use tooltips throughout the Commons. I believe I've seen the "?" icon on other Commons pages but am not sure where.

Sounds good. I like the tooltip approach for this.

This is now available for testing on cdev. (Internal reference - https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cac/compare/00baefa...a8e9388)
The "Email to Group" info block is added to the group header if a user is a group member.
Here's a quick GIF:
You might need to purge your browser cache for the tooltip styling to take effect.
Let me know if any of the verbiage or styling needs changing.
