Bug #2297
closedCharacter entities in emails
0%
Description
This issue is related to
http://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/2129
and
http://redmine.gc.cuny.edu/issues/2288
I'm putting it as a separate bug because this has to do with character entities appearing in emails (see screenshot) and not the length of the emails themselves.
I wasn't sure whether to put it in CBOX or BuddyPress. It appears that others in the BP community are also experiencing this same problem.

http://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/4401
I don't recall seeing the problem of character entities not being converted inside of the email on CAC emails so perhaps there is something in the difference between the two configurations that is a clue as to why it shows up in some situations and not in others.

This sounds like an issue with the Group Email Subscription plugin, not BuddyPress.
I'll take a deeper look.

This specific issue is separate from #2129 and #2288.
bbPress is the culprit here. It's running text through some inappropriate display filters before sending it to the BP activity stream, which is causing problems when GES hooks into bp-activity. I've opened a ticket at bbPress with some suggested fixes: http://bbpress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/2082
In the meantime, I think what I'll probably do for our purposes is write a function that steps in whenever GES detects a bbPress item, fetches the raw post content from the db, and puts the entire thing into the email notification. This'll reproduce the similar functionality that we have on CAC (full forum text in notifications), and it will effectively bypass the bbPress problem described here. This fix could be put into GES or into Commons In A Box; I'm thinking that, for the moment, Commons In A Box is the appropriate place for it.
I'll update this ticket when I've got a fix ready to go. https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/commons-in-a-box/issues/46

- Status changed from Assigned to Resolved
OK, there's now a fix in place in Commons In A Box, and the fix is live on commonsinabox.org. Marking resolved for our purposes.
